Libraries start world cup celebration

Date: 30-May-06 by margery peddie

Islington Council's Library Service is offering football fans a chance to mark the 2006 World Cup by entering a competition that tests their knowledge about football. It means one lucky person will win a 'replica' football shirt of their choice and a further five people will win a copy of a book called 'History of the World Cup' that will help them learn everything there is to know about the tournament.

Residents of all ages are welcome to enter the competition by collecting a free copy of the 'celebrate the World Cup with Islington libraries' booklet from any library in the borough. As well as being the competition entry form, which must be completed and returned to any library in Islington by 8 July, the booklet includes a guide to the matches that will be played.

Throughout the tournament, all libraries will run activities for children including a writing competition and will have exciting displays highlighting not just football but the music, literature and culture of the competing countries.

While collecting their football guide and competition entry form, residents can use the opportunity to find out more about what is available from their local library. For example, there are great books for all ages and interests and creative promotions, the latest releases on DVD, music, free Internet access, sessions for toddlers as well as information about local history and opportunities for families to learn together.

A partnership has been forged between libraries and football clubs to promote reading. Earlier this year Arsenal and Switzerland defender Philippe Senderos, featured in the national launch of the Premiership Reading Stars project at North Library.
