Date: 30-May-06 by nicola quinn

Islington has joined forces with 10 other London councils to make a stand on noisy neighbours.

One third of London's authority's signed up to the initiaitive and displayed a 'Big Pile' of seized stereo equipment in a dramatic warning to offenders, before it was subsequently broken up and recycled.

The Big Pile event took place at Smugglers Way Waste Transfer Station, in Wandsworth, on Thursday May 25th.

The recycling of the around 200 pieces of equipment was part of Noise Action Week (22-26 May). Local London recycling firm, New Leaf, refurbished or fully recycled the equipment, which was made up of:

· amplifiers
· portable stereos
· CD players
· turn tables

The metal and plastic was sent for recycling in the UK and will be used as raw material for manufacturing.

Islington Council receives thousands of complaints about noise every year. In many cases, noise making equipment is confiscated and can be destroyed.

George Allan, Islington's Executive Member for Customer Focus, said: "Thoughtless residents can often cause excessive noise with their hi-fi equipment and end up making their neighbour's lives a misery.

They should realise we can seize their equipment for good.

Rather than throwing this equipment away, we are reusing it or recycling it."

Notes for Editors:

The dimensions of the pile were 6ft x 15ft x 8ft
Equipment from Brent, Camden, Croydon, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Southwark, Sutton and Westminster made up the Pile.
