Highbury fields, Islington's largest and much loved park is set to be improved and Islington Council wants you to get involved by telling us what changes you'd like to see.
Councillor Lucy Watt, executive member for environment, who is encouraging people to get involved said:
"I would like everyone who uses the park, or who would like to use the park, to share their ideas and together we can create a vision for the future of Highbury Fields."
"Highbury Fields is a beautiful park and a real gem in terms of our greenspace in Islington. The mature trees, and the calm setting away from busy roads, create a peaceful oasis for those seeking to escape Holloway Road and Upper Street. This is a park for everyone, and I hope that this consultation process will capture the views of its diverse range of visitors."
As part of the ongoing consultation and by working very closely with the Highbury Fields Association, the local community and a team including architects and landscape gardeners the council will develop a 'vision' for the future of Highbury Fields. This will include a series of costed proposals that would see the park improved in the coming years. The council will also use its 'vision' to pursue funding from a wide range of sources.
Some of the issues that will need to be considered include:
· A full review of the site including an assessment of its historic, environmental and social significance;
· A detailed analysis of current patterns of usage including both formal and informal activities; and,
· A careful assessment of future proposals which may impact upon the site such as: the proposed expansion of Highbury Pool; the opening of the new Arsenal Stadium; a new shaft which is needed to serve the tube; and, any work associated with improvements to the A1 / Highbury Corner.
The first public consultation evening is on Wednesday 7 June from 6.30pm, at Highbury Baptist Church, 40a Highbury Place, N5. This is an opportunity to find out more and for people to have their say.
