Caring for Islington's disabled people

Date: 10-Apr-06 by margery peddie

Three consultation events have been organised for disabled people and their carers for 2 and 30 June and 4 September. They will be held at Islington Town Hall and The Resource Centre in Holloway (both sites are fully accessible to wheelchair users). Islington Council, local organisations that support disabled people and Homes for Islington have organised the events to give people a chance to:

*Learn more about new duties the council and its partners will have under the Disabled Discrimination Act 2005, as well as share their experiences of council services.

*Identify actions and improvements they want the council to make and include in its Disability Equality Scheme and Action Plan, which under the Act it must prepare.

*Find out what is in the action plan, once it is prepared, and say what they think needs to be changed.

The consultations will all take place between 10.30am and 3.30pm.

Under the Disability Discrimination Act 2005, councils must 'promote equality' for disabled people and produce a Disability Equality Scheme and plan. The plan must explain how the council intends to improve services and ensure disabled have equal access to them.

The final Disability Equality Scheme will be launched in December 2006.

Residents who want more information about the consultations should contact Dionne Gay on 020 7527 3241. Alternatively, she can be emailed, dionne.gay@islington.gov.uk
