Britain's largest inner city regeneration scheme got the go ahead last week (9 March) with Camden Council's approval of a Masterplan for Kings Cross Central.
The first phase of the mixed use urban development scheme - which is also one of the largest in Europe - could be in place in time for the 2012 Olympic Games. The approved Masterplan will form the basis for the detailed scheme that will see the phased development of the land adjacent to the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
While most of the 60 acre development lies within Camden, the close proximity to existing Islington neighborhoods which surround much of the site meant Islington has been involved in the planning consultation.
Cllr Bridget Fox - executive member for sustainability said: "Kings Cross Central is one of Europe's most significant regeneration project - and it is right on our doorstep. This is a unique opportunity to see this area transformed & Islington has worked hard to see the plans change to provide a better mix of jobs, housing, leisure and environmental improvements to benefit the local community.
Kings Cross is set to become an exciting new destination rather than the rundown transport interchange of the past -- and our determination is to see that local people feel these are developments in which they can share."
Kings Cross Central is the jewel in the crown of the wider regeneration of the area - it includes the award winning Regents Quarter, the opening of Eurostar Terminal in 2007, the Guardian Newspaper HQ relocation and the canalside concert Hall in 2008/9.
Over the next 15 years, the Masterplan now provides Kings Cross with a vision and provides certainty in the future of Kings Cross which will attract further investment and regeneration of the surround area.
