Islington Council received an award at this years 'ENCAMS' in recognition of its drive for a cleaner, safer, greener borough.
The council fought off stiff competition to secure second place in the 'Environment Champion' category for its innovative Tidy Business Standard scheme.
Councillor Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability, "We all want a cleaner, safer and greener Islington. Through our Tidy Business Standard scheme the council is working with local businesses to support them in improving our environment. The scheme is proving a great success with over 73 members and I'm delighted that Islington has been rewarded for this innovative scheme"
The scheme rewards businesses that meet tidy business standards with bronze, silver or gold awards for their achievements and best practice in waste disposal. It also identifies waste minimization and trade recycling possibilities and encourages initiatives that have a positive impact on Islington's environment.
Most recently the council has introduced a glass recycling scheme that could save businesses more than 50% on their current charges.
Sam Hjelm, manager of the Bierodrome in Upper Street who are already part of the scheme said:
"I'm delighted that we are part of this glass recycling scheme and the fact that we are a business that cares about the environment is recognised in Tidy Business Standards scheme run by the council."
The national 'Cleaner, Safer, Greener' awards took place in Sheffield on 28 February and received applications from Cleaner Safer Greener Network (CSGN) members across the whole of the UK.
