Building work on the New North Community School at New North Road, N1 reached a milestone this week with the inaugural bricklaying ceremony attended by Cllr James Kempton and two children from the school.
New North Community School pupils Okera Dzartah, 7, and Charlotte Colvil, 9, donned hard hats and picked up trowels to get the building work officially started.
Developers Community Solutions for Schools Ltd expect construction company Bluestone, to complete the £6.8m new school in 2007.
Speaking on behalf of Community Solutions for Schools managing director Nigel Bennett said: "The project demonstrates the benefit of funding mixed use developments like these. We are delighted to provide the first new primary school in Islington for 30 years."
Cllr James Kempton, executive member for Children said:
"I can't think of better news for the first week of spring than this bricklaying ceremony.
Right across the borough, we have ambitious plans for school rebuild and refurbishment that will bring our facilities into the 21st Century - enabling all Islington children to achieve exam success in core subjects like english and maths - and in doing so reach their potential.
Children - and parents - can look forward to some first class schools as a result."
