Islington Council secured its 10th prosecution for rubbish dumping as it continued its drive to keep the streets of Islington clean.
Councillor Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability explained:
"A cleaner Islington is a top priority and it's up to all of us to play our part. Through a combination of education, rapid clean-ups and fining persistent offenders the council is working hard to keep our streets clean."
Since November 2005 the council's waste enforcement team have searched through thousands of dumped bin bags and examined untold waste to find out who has been illegally dumping in our borough.
In that time the council has issued 212 fixed penalty notices, 205 warning notices and 44 statutory notices.
By spreading the 'cleaner, safer, greener' message the council aims to educate people and change the way we all behave when it comes to disposing of our rubbish. In the case of local businesses the council wants them to present their refuse for collection neatly, as near to their collection time as possible and to use an authorised contractor.
Christina Lovett, Angel Town Centre Manager who fully supports the council's enforcement action, says, "Everyone taking responsibility together will mean that the Angel will be safer, cleaner and brighter. The cleaner the area the better people will feel about it which is good for both local businesses and residents."
The 10 prosecutions, all heard at Highbury Magistrates' Court since November 2005 are for infringements of the Environmental Protection Act, in particular, the illegal disposal of waste.
