Islington Council

Lighting up the future of the A1

Date: 06-Mar-06 by kitsy kinane

Highbury Fields will be sparkling and shining at the FREE A1 Festival of Light on Saturday 25th March at Highbury Fields.

Over 400 young people will form a Path of Light with a procession of lanterns and music along the A1 - to celebrate the past, present and future of the borough's main road. A synthetic ice-skating rink will be set up for the first time in Highbury Fields and the London Urban Collective will provide some of the musical entertainment.

Cllr Bridget Fox, Lead Member for Sustainability, said: 'Improving the A1 is one of the Council's priorities and the festival is a wonderful opportunity to involve local children and the wider community in celebrating the past, present and future of the backbone of our borough.'

The young people will parade into Highbury Fields and transform part of it into a magical lantern garden alongside the synthetic ice-skating rink, live performances by outstanding world musicians and a FREE prize draw donated by local businesses.

It looks like ice, it feels like ice but it's not real ice. Readers have the chance to win tickets in advance to the synthetic ice-skating rink since tickets will be very limited on the day. Check out Islington's website www.islington.gov.uk for details on how to enter the competition.

The contest closes on Monday, 20th March 2006, and winners will be notified on the 24th March.

Festival programme:

· World Music Programme from 5 to 9pm, featuring the London Urban Collective and bands from Ethiopia, Turkey, Bulgaria and more.
· Arrival of 'Path of Light' lantern procession at 6.30-6.45pm.

The festival is part of Islington's ongoing work to transform the A1 and make it a better place to live, work and study in.
