Date: 06-Apr-06 by charles dean

Islington's long and proud association with the Dame Alice Owen Foundation goes from strength to strength this week with the announcement of funding for educational projects to benefit children and young people in the borough.

Dame Alice Owen Foundation is investing £300,00 in Highbury Grove School over the next 3 years to raise achievement in english and maths.

Highbury Grove School Headteacher, Truda White said: "The support from the Dame Alice Owen Foundation is very welcome, and will provide a great boost for the school and the students."

The hugely successful "Upward Bound" partnership with Holloway and EGA pupils will also be extended to 4 other secondary schools. Upward Bound is a mentor-assisted programme to provide students with additional support in core subjects: English, Maths and Science.

The funding will also continue to support the Summer University, the Islington Youth Theatre, and the pupil parliament as it has done over the past 4 years.

Paul Curran, Director of Childrens Services said: "Our pupils are on target to achieve 50% 5 A* - C GCSE passes this summer. But we remain ambitious to improve our schools still further and this investment in Highbury Grove School and other ssecondary schools will have a real impact on rasing attainment. I thank Dame Alice Owen Foundation for their continuing support of education in Islington.

Truda White has done an outstanding job in improving Highbury Grove School. I congratulate her on these achievements which are typical of the excellent leadership skills in our schools."

David Ross (Chief Executive of the Brewers' Company, Trustee of the Dame Alice Owen's Foundation) commented:

"We are delighted that the Dame Alice Owen's Foundation has been able to continue its support for such imaginative educational projects in Islington which are designed to raise attainment. The young people of Islington are the Borough's most valuable resource. We are proud to be able to help and to work closely with the schools involved, with Islington Council and with CEA@Islington. This partnership is going from strength to strength."

Islington Council this week confirmed it was renewing its contract with Cambridge Education to provide schools management in the borough for a further five years through CEA@islington.
