Statement on disposal of the borough's recyclable material

Date: 17-Feb-06 by nicola quinn

Today (Friday 17 February) Islington Council released a report commissioned into the disposal of the borough's recyclable material.

The report is the result of an investigation launched by Islington Council into allegations that materials collected in Islington for recycling had gone astray.

London Waste Ltd (LWL) and its sub-contractor Grosvenor Waste Management (GWM) handle Islington’s recycling.

Cllr Bridget Fox executive member for sustainability says:

“We have taken the allegations very seriously which is why we carried out our own investigation immediately. I’m pleased that we can confirm that Islington’s recycling is being handled correctly and we can reassure residents that their waste is indeed being properly recycled.

“On the basis of the evidence that I, and others have seen the council is confident that Grosvenor Waste Management send materials to be recycled. Like all contractors working on behalf of the council we will continue to inspect and monitor them. We will carry on working to provide our residents with an ever-improving recycling service. I’m pleased that Islington residents have helped us hit an all time recycling rate high of 21.3%.”

Islington Council officers and Councillor Bridget Fox were shown evidence by GWM. It included shipping documents, recycling certificates, and contained names, addresses, dates and official stamps.

LWL and GWM have the correct licences, insurances and accreditation. These have been checked and verified by council officers. The licences and accreditations for GWM were checked in April 2005 and again in December 2005.

GWM are independently audited and monitored by the Environment Agency and DEFRA, most recently in November 2005.

The council’s own investigation began in December 2005 and ended in January 2006.

GWM have 23 other London councils as clients.
