Islington's recycling rate reached a record level of 21.3% for January 2006 as more and more people in the borough choose not to ‘bin it’!
Councillor Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability said: “We are working to making it easier to recycle in Islington. I’m delighted that it is fast becoming the people’s choice for disposing of their rubbish. The council offers a door-to-door service to thousands of homes and there are drop off- points up and down the borough. We take your glass, cans, paper, plastic bottles, kitchen and garden waste. We aim to offer the service to all residents and we are looking at ways to make it work for everyone.
“Our services are expanding all the time – we’ve now got a glass collection service for local businesses and in January we collected 7906 Christmas trees. It’s great that people are recycling but I’d still like to encourage more of you to give it a try. Why not give us a call or visit our website and join the growing number of residents who don’t just ‘bin it!â€
Recycling is getting easier in Islington through a range of new services such as green and kitchen waste collections and the door-to-door collection of dry recyclables like paper from residents living on estates.
January’s recycling figure puts the council on track to hit the Government’s annual 18% recycling target for 2005/2006. This figure is an average for the whole year.
