Even more homes in Islington will be refurbished under the Decent Homes programme, thanks to the council's "impressive achievements" acknowledged by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister this week.
The praise brought with it the promise of extra funding and Islington is one of 13 local authorities to be awarded additional funding to further the work of their arms-length management organisations (ALMOs), which were set up to manage council properties in their boroughs.
Islington has been allocated around £20million, to further the work being carried out its ALMO, Homes for Islington (HfI).
The additional funding will boost the council's efforts to meet the Decent Homes Standard by 2010. Under the standard, HfI will undertake vital home improvements such as new kitchens and bathrooms, as well as work on home insulation and damp-proofing.
Cllr Jyoti Vaja, executive member for housing and community safety said: "I am delighted that we have secured this additional funding, which means that even more of our properties can be brought up to the decent homes standard by 2010. Everyone deserves a warm, safe and secure place to live and together with Homes for Islington, we are working hard to make sure that we can achieve this.
