Islington said goodbye to the old and hello the new at the planting of the new Barnsbury Beech (Wednesday 8 February 2006).
Councillor Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability who helped plant the new tree said:
“We really do love our trees in Islington which is why I was delighted to be a part of the planting of the new Barnsbury Beech. It was very sad to lose the original Barnsbury Beech to disease - this event has been a chance both to commemorate that great tree and to plant a new tree for future generations to enjoy. Making Islington greener is a priority for the council and by March we will have planted over 1,000 new trees since November last year.”
The new tree was planted at the site of its famous predecessor, listed as one of the Great Trees of London, which fell victim to serious fungal infection last October. The old Barnsbury Beech, believed to have been more than 150 years old, was located in the garden of a council housing property, Thornhill House, in Barnsbury Park.
Councillor Fox also presented local residents with a mounted piece (cross section) of the old tree that will adorn the wall in the entrance of Thornhill House - an everlasting reminder of the much loved Barnsbury Beech.
