Council gives boost to businesses recycling

Date: 03-Feb-06 by nicola quinn

Businesses could save more than 50 per cent by recycling their waste, thanks to an innovative new scheme run by Islington Council.

Businesses borough-wide can now sign up to Islington Council's highly successful trade glass recycling scheme, which was piloted last year, and has now been rolled out across the borough.

All Islington businesses can now put their empty glass bottles and containers in the environmentally-friendly electric handcarts that are used to collect rubbish for recycling, saving money and doing their bit for the environment.

Sam Hjelm, manager of the Bierodrome in Upper Street who are already part of the scheme said:

"I'm delighted that we are part of this glass recycling scheme and the fact that we are a business that cares about the environment is recognised in Tidy Business Standards scheme run by the council."

Councillor Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability, commends the scheme. “This is an imaginative and worthwhile initiative for Islington. Encouraging the recycling of glass is a winner for the community and the council. Glass is easily recycled, and this saves both energy and raw materials. Not only can it be recycled back into bottles and jars but it can also be used, for example, as road-making material. It’s a perfect example of how valuable recycling can be and I welcome the way that local businesses are taking this on board through our scheme.”
