A1 student sleuths say hello to Oslo

Five students from St Joseph's Primary School in Islington are to visit Oslo with Mayor Jonathan Dearth to investigate how schools in Norway deal with environmental issues.

The year five students will visit Ulleval School in Oslo on February 13th and 14th to gather information on how our Scandanavian neighbours deal with litter, recycling and anti-social behaviour. They will also assess how the school and Oslo city create a clean, green and safe environment.

Mayor Dearth, whose theme for the year is International in Islington, said: 'I'm delighted to be accompanying the children on their trip to Norway. Scandanavian cities are famous for being clean and safe - that's how we want Islington to be. The children at St Joseph's have been in contact with Ulleval School since last October and will consolidate that relationship with this exchange visit.'

Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability, said: This is something new for local kids - we're hoping this unique pilot project will encourage other schools to take part in similar exchanges and help us all tackle litter, recycling and anti-social behaviour even better in future.'

The international exchange project is part of the A1 Borough Schools Environmental Project, which is working with schools along the A1 to raise environmental and social awareness and encourage them to respect their school and wider environment. It's also part of Islington's overall plan for the A1 to make it cleaner, greener and safer.

On their return, the children will report back their findings to the rest of the school by hosting an assembly and question and answer sessions. St Joseph's will be receiving visitors from Ulleval School on an exchange trip in March.
