Islington Council are offering residents an innovative way to check they are not missing out on some of the millions of pounds of benefits that are unclaimed each year.
The council, whose cutting edge online ‘benefits calculator’ is making it easier for residents to work out their entitlements are, and whether they are claiming the right amount.
Council staff ran a workshop on how to use the web-based system, which is just one of the many services now offered to residents online.
Further workshops are planned for March, in a number of locations including local libraries, thanks to the success of this inaugural session.
The online 'Benefits Calculator' allows residents to check their eligibility for and calculate their entitlement to housing and council tax benefit, at any time.
Residents can also download and print relevant claim forms.
The free seminar, which was held on Wednesday 8 February, was well attended, and staff were on hand to guide residents through the easy-to-use service.
Cllr Jyoti Vaja, executive member for housing and community safety said: “The benefit system can seem like a real jungle, but we're determined to make it easier and simpler for local people to get what they're entitled to. In the past, customers would have to book an appointment with an advisor in an area housing office. The online system means it's easier than ever to find out if you or your family are entitled to a benefit.”
