PHOTO OPPORTUNITY<br><br>When: Friday 27 January from 4 to 7pm.<br>Where: taking place along the pedestrian area on Old Street outside the Post Office<br><br>Live entertainment and a cutting-edge lighting display will be just some of the enticing events which will mark the kick-off the award-winning Old Street Promenade of Light project this Friday.<br><br>Islington residents are all invited to the launch of the project, which aims to make the area between the Old Street roundabout and Bath Street a safer, more accessible space, serving a variety of needs of local residents.<br><br>Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability, said: “We are all very excited about this project - the improvements will see Old Street become a much more attractive and welcoming public place that can be used by people of all ages.<br><br>I would encourage everyone who lives or works around Old Street to come along and get a feel for the transformation that will take place.”<br><br>EC1 New Deal board member and local resident Rebecca Cresswell said the event will be a good opportunity for people to find out more about the planned changes:<br><br>“A significant number of local people have been involved in the consultation stages of this project and they will be pleased to see that work is now underway,” said Ms Cresswell.<br><br>The ‘new’ Old Street will see run down footpaths and underused gardens replaced with new seating, paving, flower beds and a promenade of trees and lights along the pedestrian area to the west of the Old Street roundabout.<br><br>Plans and information will be on display at Friday’s event to inform residents, local businesses and passers-by of the changes that are planned for the area. <br><br>Find out how the space will be transformed through the following features on Friday:<br><br>o Cutting edge lighting display<br>o Information stalls about the scheme<br>o Live entertainment<br>o A spot lit mini digger serving as a backdrop for the speeches <br><br>Tonkin Liu Architects developed the award-winning designs of the project, in partnership with Islington Council, EC1 New Deal for Communities and Transport for London. <br><br>The design won first prize in the ‘urban space by design’ (unbuilt category) in the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) competition in June 2005.<br><br>The event is taking place along the pedestrian area on Old Street outside the Post Office this Friday 27 January between 4pm and 7pm.<br><br>ENDS<br><br>
