Archway is to be given a face-lift this Spring when Islington will spend £320,000 on improving the environment around the area.
Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability, said: ‘The regeneration of the Archway area is a long held desire of both local residents and Islington Council and we’re well on our way towards developing a master plan to radically transform the area in consultation with residents. However, we’re very keen on making Archway a more pleasant place to live, work and visit before any major regeneration takes place.’
Junction Road is the big winner with £180,000 due to be spent on revamping the busy road to make it more accessible and more attractive. The railings, bollards and other street furniture currently cluttering the area outside the tube station will be removed to create a much cleaner and more welcoming environment for pedestrians. The footways will also be repaved helping to make it more accessible.
And the triangle green patch at the top end of Holloway Road is to be spruced up as part of the works including putting in extra lighting to make the area safer as well as look better.
Following requests from local groups, up to 100 new trees will be planted in the area with some of these being planted along Junction Road. This includes tree planting in residential streets around the town centre.
Three new pedestrian way finding boards will also be put up alongside five new street trader kiosks. Whittington’s cat will be cleaned, new swings will be added to Archway Park and more planting will be carried out in the green spaces in the Archway area such as Archway corner and Giesbach Road. All work will be completed before summer 2006.
The work is part of the council’s A1 Borough project which is Islington’s ambitious plan to transform the environment in and around the A1 street from Goswell Road to Archway making it a better place to live, work and study in.
