Islington received its highest ever allocation from Transport for London for this coming year, with over £6m being allocated to the borough for the delivery of transport projects.
Islington’s has received an increase of 25% on the previous year and is the second highest in London. This highlights Islington’s improving record, not only as a council overall, but particularly in the delivery of transport projects on time and within budget.
The money will be allocated to specific projects across a broad range of disciplines, including:
· nine safer routes to school schemes
· £1.2 million for local safety and traffic calming schemes
· £0.57 million for cycling measures
· funding for two new walking routes linking Tufnell Park to Crouch Hill, and
Caledonian Road to Finsbury Park
· £0.65 million for the Angel Town Centre
· £0.3 million for the EC1 New Deal Area
· £70,000 to extend the Scootability Scheme to 19-54 year olds
· maintenance of Junction Road
· other projects including safer routes to public transport, environmental schemes
and freight initiatives
The bid forms part of the council’s commitment to maximise funding for Islington to support projects that make a difference to residents and businesses as well as being part of Islington’s A1 Borough vision.
Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability said: ““This is fantastic news for Islington. The £6.25m settlement will enable the council to concentrate on delivering more improvements to the transport system across the borough for the benefit of our residents, businesses and visitors.
Our success bringing this money into the borough shows that we can work in partnership with Transport for London to get the best deal for Islington."
Pat Hayes, Director of Borough Partnerships at Transport for London commented: “Islington submitted a strong bid for Borough Spending Plan funding which was well matched with the Mayor of London's transport priorities. We are pleased to have been able to allocate such a significant amount of funding to the borough and look forward to working with them to deliver some exciting projects.”
The council submitted the bid to TfL as part of an annual process, with schemes due to commence in April 2006.
