Islington Council’s tree service will hold a Tree Giveaway Day on Saturday 26 November 2005.

Five hundred trees and woody shrubs suitable for inner London gardens will be given free-of-charge to the first five hundred residents to attend the event, which will run from 10am to 1pm at Highbury Fields (opposite Fieldway Cresent).

This is the second year the tree service has run this popular event, which is in celebration of National Tree Week (23 November to 4 December). Now in its 30th year, National Tree Week is the Tree Council’s festival to mark the start of the tree-planting season (see www.treecouncil.org.uk for more information).

Residents will be given an information sheet with advice on where and how best to plant their tree or shrub and are being asked to bring along a plastic bag to keep the roots moist.

Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability said: “Islington has 40,000 trees across the borough, but we want residents’ help to plant another 500 new trees on private property.

The recent loss of the famous 150-year-old Barnsbury Beech is a reminder that trees don’t live forever and we need to be constantly replanting to ensure there are lots of beautiful mature trees around for future generations.”

Islington Council’s tree service is responsible for caring for trees on council-owned land. There is also a service within the council which deals with trees on private land, applications regarding tree preservation orders and conservation areas.

For more information contact the Islington Council tree service on 020 7527 2000.

ENDS
