Remember Dick Whittington’s cat or the rustlers on Holloway Road? Then the council wants to hear from you! <br><br>Islington is looking for residents with memories and past stories about the A1 and specific Islington icons to form part of a walking audio tour of the area.<br><br>The tour will span the A1 from Archway to Clerkenwell and is told from the perspective of local people. It is due for completion in March 2006.<br><br>Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability, said: “The A1 is London’s original road - we are looking forward to big changes to improve the A1 over the next few years, and as part of this, the council is keen to preserve and promote its history and heritage. <br><br>The audio tour will enable people to walk any part of the A1 and learn all about its colourful past."<br><br>The audio tour will be available on CD, and will also be downloadable from the council’s website onto an iPod, mobile phone or MP3 player.<br><br>Simon Fraser of Absolute Theatre, an Islington artist, has been commissioned to lead the project and interview residents of the borough who have interesting stories to tell about life around the A1. <br><br>“I see the A1 Audio Tour as a special opportunity to blend the centuries of history and wonderful stories surrounding the road with the voices of the people who live and work there now,” says Simon. <br><br>“It has the potential to be an audio time capsule, depicting our view of life along the road in the early 21st century.”<br><br>If you would like to contribute contact either the project manager Tabitha Timothy on 020 7251 8989, or email the artist: simon@absolutetheatre.co.uk by 9 January 2005.<br><br><br>Notes to Editors<br>David Powell Associates and Metal have been commissioned by Islington Council to facilitate the creative elements of the A1 project.
