Date: 14-Nov-05 by Charles Dean

Islington Council showcased its new look waste enforcement team during Enforcement Week last month, spreading the cleaner, safer, greener message throughout the streets of Islington.

The team, which included a giant cigarette and a crisp packet, targeted specific areas around the borough each day, educating people about littering and other waste issues.

During Enforcement Week (17-21 October) the team gave out 700 stubbies gum pouches (pouches which can hold used gum or cigarette butts), 200 recycling bags, 200 information leaflets and provided advice on waste matters to almost 100 residents.

They searched 219 dumped rubbish bags, issued 37 verbal warnings and 41 written warnings to people failing to meet legal waste requirements. Tougher penalties were also issued where necessary, including ten fixed penalties for littering, with a further ten cases being considered for prosecution.

Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability, said: “Islington’s streets are getting cleaner and we want them to stay that way. Nobody wants to see our streets covered in litter.

Our waste enforcement team used Enforcement Week as an opportunity to tell people throughout the borough how we want Islington to be cleaner, safer, and greener.

Littering is not acceptable, especially when we are providing so many alternative options, from new bins to the stubbies gum pouches.”

Enforcement Week ran from 17-21 October.
