Memorial bench commemorates life of much-loved local

Date: 09-Nov-05 by Charles Dean

Whenever they feel like taking a break from playing, children at St Joan of Arc Primary School will now be able to sit on two new memorial benches at the school.

They were installed in the school playground in memory of the school’s long-serving school crossing patrol officer, Frank Wilson who sadly died earlier this year.

Frank’s widow, Ellen, and daughter, Liz, who works at the school, visited the children to officially open the memorial benches earlier this week.

The idea for the benches came about when Frank’s family approached the school to discuss a way in which the children and the school could always remember their favourite lollipop man.

“As he was so well-loved by the local community, we knew that people wanted to contribute something to Frank’s memory and so, instead of flowers, we thought of having something more long lasting and practical that would benefit the schoolchildren,” said Ellen Wilson.

Clare Campbell, Headteacher at St Joan of Arc Primary said: “The St Joan of Arc school community were very fortunate to have Frank Wilson as their school crossing patrol officer for 12 years.

“We feel very privileged to have two benches placed in our school grounds in memory of such a wonderful lollipop man. I know that the children will really appreciate the opportunity to sit and chat on our new benches.”

Frank Wilson worked for Islington Council as the lollipop man for St Joan of Arc Primary School.

Anyone interested in a part time job with a school crossing patrol can call the council on 020 7527 2547.

ENDS
