Islington Council has confirmed that it will be consulting English Heritage over the planning permission to construct a new 5-19 school incorporating St Mary Magdalene Primary School, Liverpool Road, N7.

Although the new school is not in a conservation area, concern has been expressed about the impact of the new buildings on adjacent conservation areas. A legal challenge has been made on the council's planning permission by local residents Terry Powers and Rani Bibi.

Cllr James Kempton, executive member for children said:

"This is an important educational project and we want to make sure we follow the correct planning procedure and get it absolutely right.

"Although we had consulted widely prior to awarding planning permission, English Heritage's views were not asked for and this is something we are keen to put right.

"We will seek the courts permission to withdraw the existing consent and then we will be able to formally consult English Heritage on the application. The proposal will then go back to planning committee.

"Parents have told us that they want this school and we hope to resolve the matter as soon as possible to keep the project on time."

ENDS
