Date: 11-Nov-05 by Nicola Quinn

Listen Up everyone - Islington's got a new website created for and by children and young people.

Just log onto www.young.islington.gov.uk where you'll find a new site packed full of interactive elements like games, online polls and competitions. It's got useful information and advice about health, learning, work and keeping safe!

In addition to the council's *Listen Up project the website is an excellent way for young people to have their say about issues in their local area, find out about what is going on and how to get involved. The council will also use it as a way to engage with children and young people and find out what they think.

Young Islington is the result of a years work in which young people played a major part. Over 1000 children and young people in Islington were asked about what they wanted to see on their website and they were also involved shaping the look and feel of the site.

Samir Pasha, age 16, attended the design workshop at the White Lion Centre where he worked with other young people and the design team to plan out how the site should look said:

"I think it's one of the first steps towards young people having an input into decision-making".

Councillor Laura Willoughby, executive member for communities said: "The new site is great and it's is designed by young people for young people. They control the design and content of this site.

"We want young people to tell us what they think and get involved in the running of their borough. After all, they use many of the councils services - and in many cases they use more of them then adults. We need their ideas to help make the borough better for everyone."

*The council's Listen Up is a children and young people's involvement project that aims to find out what young people in Islington think about the area they live in, so that their ideas can be involved when the council makes decisions about the things that affect young people.

Ends
