Local children, Islington Mayor, Jonathan Dearth, and Charlie the Clown, led the clean up at North King’s Cross at a community event held on Saturday 29 October.<br><br>The event was the culmination of a week of activities that focused on recycling and saw participants energetically collecting and sorting rubbish for recycling into bags of glass, plastic and paper from the area around Bemerton and Caledonian Roads, Islington.<br><br>The annual event, the third of its kind, was organised by Islington Council’s North King’s Cross Neighbourhood Management Project and was attended by the Mayor, the project’s chair Councillor Arnie Gibbons and Councillors Bridget Fox and Carol Powell.<br><br>Residents came out in force to visit information stalls on Tilloch Street with information available on a range of issues such as healthy eating, energy efficiency, the Plus Bus and recycling at home.<br><br>As well as leading on the clean up, local children headlined the entertainment with street dancing and singing performances. <br><br>Executive member for sustainability, Councillor Bridget Fox, said: “I was delighted with the turnout and staggered by the number of local community groups, businesses, volunteers and statutory agencies that got behind the event.”<br><br>Islington Council's Clean Team, Crumbles Castle adventure playground, Copenhagen Youth Project, Sure Start took part. Other rganisations involved included the ICSL Waste Management, Bemerton Villages Tenant Management Organisation (TMO), Kennedy Public House, Cartridge World, Killick Street Community Health Project, Caledonian Road branch of the Co-op, Tesco, Apollo (London) and Cally Time Bank.<br><br>“The involvement of all these organisations combined with the enthusiasm from the local residents shows that this unique and diverse area of the borough has a deep sense of community and cares about its local environment,” Cllr Fox said.<br><br>“The Council is now investing millions of pounds in keeping Islington cleaner and greener, so the hard work of these young volunteers is building on a firm foundation. The Tidy Citizen Certificates that each of the participating children received were especially well deserved.”<br><br>Gloria Johnson, treasurer of Bemerton TMO and Chair of the Area Housing Panel, presented the certificates.<br><br>Other activities in the lead up to the clean-up day included:<br>· an arts competition and exhibition in West Library<br>· a puppet show and workshop in West Library <br>· a visit to the Recycling Education Centre <br>· bulb re-planting on Tilloch Street <br><br>ends
