Road closures are planned for three weeks from October 22, to allow Thames Water to replace part of a water main beneath Dartmouth Park Hill.

The work has been brought forward to prevent having to dig up the road following resurfacing by Islington Council in January 2006.

Thames Water will also be fitting meters to separate pipes beneath the road, in order to monitor the flow of water into the area. Exploratory engineering studies for this part of the work began on Monday 10 October.

Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability, said: “Nobody like road works - by working together with Thames Water, we want to ensure that residents get the benefits of new water mains and resurfaced roads with minimum disruption. By co-ordinating Thames Water works with the Council's road resurfacing programme, we save residents time, nuisance and make best use of their council tax."

Jaymin Patel, Thames Water's Project Manager, said: "We have already been working in the area for some time, replacing old and leaky water mains with new pipes.

"We decided it was best to bring forward the replacement of the main beneath Dartmouth Park Hill in order not to have to dig it up again following the resurfacing work. The main has burst on several occasions in the past, so it's important that we renew it in order to prevent problems in the future.

"The planning of this work is a good example of different organisations working together to minimise disruption to local road-users."

ENDS
