On the morning of 28 September, 83 older people and volunteer walk leaders stepped out in the sunshine with Islington Mayor, Jonathan Dearth, on a group walk through central Islington. <br><br>The event was jointly organised by Islington Council’s Health Walks scheme and Islington PCT to show residents the benefits of walking for health and well-being.<br><br>The walk took participants through some of the borough’s most beautiful green spaces near Upper Street, and also gave them the chance to try out some healthy leisure activities at stops along the route. <br><br>After warming up with some gentle stretching in the lovely Battershill Street Gardens, the walkers made their way to the elegant Gibson Square for games of croquet, boules and quoits. <br><br>The walk then took them to the beautiful Culpeper Community Gardens where gardeners were on hand to give tips and advice. <br><br>Next stop was Islington Green for a gentle session of Tai Chi, before the journey to Islington Town Hall (via the peaceful St Mary’s Garden) for a well-earned lunch and foot massages from City and Islington College students. <br><br>Executive member for sustainability, Cllr Bridget Fox, said: “This is the third year for this popular event, which aims to promote the benefits of physical activity to older residents.” <br><br>“While previous walks have focussed on local history, this year’s theme was on showcasing Islington’s green spaces and exposing people to healthy activities that may turn into hobbies. ” <br><br>For details of regular walks, contact Islington’s Walking Co-ordinator, Emma Charlton, on 020 7527 2626.<br><br>ENDS
