Excellent, amenable and accessible - Highbury Corner hits the jackpot

Islington continues to shine with Highbury Corner announced as one of the Mayor’s 100 public spaces for London.<br><br>The Greater London Authority (GLA) is staging a major exhibition on London’s new public spaces, ‘Civilizing Spaces: Improving London’s Public Realm’, aimed at highlighting the importance of excellent, amenable and accessible public spaces in London. <br><br>Highbury Corner was announced as part of the third phase of the Mayor’s 100 public spaces, recognising Highbury Corner’s potential and importance within London.<br><br>Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability, attended the exhibition launch and said: “I am delighted that Highbury Corner has been selected as one of the Mayor’s 100 public spaces. The area has the potential to become a pivotal part of our borough and we are looking forward to working with the GLA to make it a first class destination.” <br><br>Continuing the council’s focus on urban development, the council, together with Central London Partnership, the public-private partnership for central London, recently hosted a showcase evening as part of Urban Design Week, highlighting its plans to transform the borough’s main corridor, the A1. <br><br>The evening, chaired by Ricky Burdett (Deputy Chief Advisor to the Mayor on Architecture and Urbanism) was an opportunity for experts in urban design to engage in discussion and debate regarding plans for the A1. <br><br>Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with Cllr Fox, David West (Studio Egret West – architects for the A1 Borough) and Mike McCrory (Director of Road Network Development, Transport for London).<br><br>Andrew Bramidge, Deputy Chief Executive of Central London Partnership, said: “Islington Council’s plans for the A1 will radically transform the area for the better. All of London is watching these developments and we look forward to seeing how improving the public realm will bring great benefits to the surrounding communities.”<br><br>The A1 project, part of a 10-15 year regeneration strategy for the area, aims to unite the community by transforming the A1 with eight new public spaces.
