Fly-tipping halved

Islington has achieved a massive 50% reduction in its Public Service Agreement figures for fly-tipping between 2003 and 2005.<br><br>New work practices by ICSL, Islington Council’s street cleaning providers, have had a real impact as new fly-tips have been identified by the council’s street sweepers and caged vehicles and proactively.<br><br>The main type of fly-tipping in Islington is dumped business waste, residents putting waste out for collection on the wrong day of the week and residents dumping unwanted bulky items like beds and sofas. <br><br>Cllr Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability said:<br><br>"These figures are great news for residents who tell us a cleaner Islington is a top priority, and a tribute to the hard work of all concerned. <br><br>A combination of education, rapid clean-ups and fining persistent offenders is really working - another sign of Islington's status as the most improved council in the country." <br><br>The new work practices include identifying enforcement hotspots and using legislation where residents and businesses can be now be fined up to £50,000 or be imprisoned for 6 months for dumping waste.<br><br>The end result is a cleaner, greener Islington for residents to enjoy.<br><br>ENDS
