Peace through the eyes of our young

Islington council and the borough police have been learning about peace through the eyes of Islington youngsters.<br><br>In a competition designed to get the creative juices flowing Islington’s young people were asked to draw or write a poem about what peace meant to them.<br><br>The results were simple messages of kindness to sublime artistic impressions of a more tolerant world.<br><br>Members of Islington’s faith community judged the entries and Islington Mayor, Jonathan Dearth, awarded the winners were their prizes, on Wednesday 14th September.<br><br>Sophia Tribek, age 7, was placed 3rd in the 5-7 years category, her drawing depicted bright flowers. She commented that peace meant “people being nice and polite to each other.”<br><br>Arisa Lee got top honours in the 11 years and over for her drawing of nations uniting around the world.<br><br>“I’d like to see no fighting or wars – just people being happy,” said Arisa <br><br>The competition was run to coincide with London peace week, which ran from 11th – 18th September <br><br>Laura Okuda-Hara, represented the Peace Alliance at the prize giving spoke about how pleased she was that youngsters were thinking about peace.<br><br>“We want Londoners to define what peace means to them and get pro-actively involved in peace initiatives. This young people’s arts and poetry competition was a great example of getting youths involved in creatively expressing through artwork how they see peace in London.
