There was hot competition on the borough's streets as cycling staved off stiff competition from scooter-riding commuters to win the title of fastest commuting mode at Islington’s Clever Commuter Challenge on 15 September.<br><br>Participants braved 8.30am peak hour traffic to commute from Elthorne Local Park to Finsbury Square – approximately four miles – with cyclists narrowly beating their scooter-riding competitors to arrive in 18 minutes. <br><br>Islington councillors, council officers and representatives from the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) went head-to-head to see which is faster out of cycling, (1st), scooter-riding (2nd), jogging (3rd), electric car (4th), tube (5th), and bus (6th).<br><br>Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability said: “We are delighted that Islington was recently recognised as the Sustainable Transport Borough of the Year.<br><br>This event was an innovative way of demonstrating that not only is green travel an environmentally-friendly way to get around, but it is also a healthier, quicker and cheaper way to get from A to B safely."<br><br>The council is committed to promoting green travel to the borough – creating a cleaner, greener environment and consequently a more sustainable lifestyle.”<br><br>Councillor Fox and Mayor Jonathon Dearth presented the prize to the winning cyclists. <br><br>Tom Bogdanowicz, Campaigns and Development Manager at the London Cycling Campaign <br><br>"A victory for cyclists in this year's commuter challenge shows that cycling is fast as well as healthy and enjoyable - and it's worth remembering that more cycling is good for Islington and good for London."<br><br>The Clever Commuter Challenge is part of ‘good going’ week which runs from 14–27 September.
