Archway Development Framework consultants appointed

Date: 29-Sep-05 by Nicola Quinn

The appointment of consultants to produce the Archway Development Framework has been announced.

North Area Committee on Thursday 15 September, heard how Islington Council has selected a multi-disciplinary consultant team led by architects and urban designers Building Design Partnership (BDP) along with transport consultants MVA, and Donaldsons, who will provide commercial advice.

The BDP-led team will work with the community and key stakeholders to draw up a plan for the regeneration of Archway that will meet community needs as well as being commercially viable.

The project will be undertaken in two stages. The first stage will be the development of a scoping document that will draw on the results of recent consultations and previously-identified opportunities to establish parameters for the successful redevelopment of Archway.

The second stage will be the development of masterplan options for a development framework (based on the parameters set out in the scoping document). Both stages will include local consultation to ensure the community has an input into the process.
It is intended that the development framework will be adopted as a supplementary planning document by the council’s Executive in spring 2006, as part of the emerging Local Development Framework for the borough.

Executive member for sustainability, Cllr Bridget Fox said: “Archway is a major gateway into the borough and a key focus for the council’s A1 Borough regeneration project.

Consultation has shown that residents, business and other stakeholders have high expectations for Archway - and we share these.

We all want a high-quality, lively, town centre that not only meets local shopping needs but deals with the heavy traffic and poor public transport connections as well as creating new public spaces.

BDP have been involved in numerous high quality town centre regeneration schemes. We are confident they will develop ambitious yet deliverable ideas that will finally realise the potential of Archway.”

ENDS
