Islington Council is introducing new match day parking controls around the northern part of Upper Street and Highbury Fields with overwhelming support from local residents. More than 85% of respondents were in favour of the proposals which will come into force on 2 October.

Councillor George Allan, Executive member for customer focus, said: “This almost completes the parking controls around the old and new stadiums, , so that local residents and businesses in a wide area will now be protected from on-street parking by fans.”

The first game to which the match day scheme in the northern part of Zone E will apply is between noon and 4.30pm Sunday 2 October 2005, with match day controls applying to all subsequent home games. The council started putting up signs on 5 September 2005 and work will be completed by 26 September 2005.

The match day scheme is an extension to the normal hours of operation of the existing controlled parking zone (CPZ). When Arsenal FC is playing at home, the hours of operation for the CPZ will be extended to: Monday to Friday 8.30am-8.30pm, 8.30am-4.30pm on Saturdays and 12noon-4.30pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. This is in addition to the pre-existing CPZ hours of operation: Monday to Friday 8.30am–6.30pm and 8.30am–1.30pm on Saturdays.

These match day controls will only operate on days when Arsenal FC is playing at home or are holding a special event.Advance warning of the next home match will be displayed on the CPZ entry signs on the boundary of the match day scheme.

Residents and businesses within Zone E who do not live within the match day area will still be able to use their permit to park within this match day area of Zone E.

All parking provisions and facilities currently available during the usual CPZ times, including pay and display parking and the use of visitor vouchers, will be available during the match day scheme times.

A map showing the streets included in the match day parking scheme can be found on Islington Council’s website www.islington.gov.uk/matchdayparking

ENDS
