Islington's creating schools for the future

Date: 13-Sep-05 by Nicola Quinn

Education in Islington is changing for the better and this is set to continue over the next 10 years with plans to spend over £130 million on Islington's schools.

"We want our secondary schools to be the first choice for all Islington children and their parents. We have already seen a dramatic rise in the numbers of pupils getting 5A*-C GCSEs. But we are determined to do more to raise the achievement of pupils. We have announced plans for substantially refurbishing or completely rebuilding every secondary school. Our ambitious aim is to transform the opportunities of every child and young person in Islington as they benefit from our 'one school’ approach - where every secondary school in the borough works together to share the their expertise, knowledge and specialisms. And by building on the already good links with City and Islington College and our two local universities we will be able to offer a clear pathway to A levels, vocational qualifications and a degree."

"A very great deal of money, many millions of pounds have already invested in school buildings and our partnership with CEA@Islington has already seen many changes for the better. This is an exciting time for education in Islington and I'm looking forward to the future," says Councillor James Kempton executive member for children.

Through the investment secured through the 'Building Schools for the Future' fund secondary schools buildings will be equipped with the latest information and communications technologies. This will make it possible to offer each child the best tailor-made learning opportunities from each centre of excellence across the borough - whether that’s in science, business and enterprise, sport, performing arts, languages, technology or mathematics. Every secondary school will have a specialism and Islington's schools will be at the heart of the community. They will open for longer and offer a greater diversity of learning activities for everyone.

Islington's Education Vision details exactly how education will be delivered and what children and young people can expect. As part of the ongoing changes children will be offered specialist teaching and personalised learning offering them the best possible opportunity to enjoy and achieve.

Through Islington's Education vision:

· Every child and young person will be offered a positive and attractive learning experience through creative teaching, an exciting curriculum and an innovative and inclusive environment.

· Every child or young person between 14-19 will have a learning and individual career development pathway to suit him or her that fits for work, university, further learning, and for life as an adult.

· Every young person will also be offered a wide range of activities outside school or college to participate in and enjoy.

With the Bridge Special School, St Mary Magdalene Academy and second a Academy at Islington Green more choice will be available to Islington's parents and children.
