More than 40 local residents have achieved reading, writing and arithmetic qualifications thanks to an innovative approach taken by Islington Council’s on-line learning centres.<br><br>The level one and two qualifications were accomplished using computer-based assessment or ‘exam on demand’ as part of a pilot project across central London boroughs.<br><br>Islington Online centres are supporting learners by providing study support and practice exams, as well as facilitating actual exams. <br><br>Before sitting the exam learners take a quick assessment to ascertain their levels followed by a short course to brush up on their skill. <br><br>“We are committed to improving adult learning opportunities throughout the borough and our Online Centres are an excellent place to start. <br><br>"We are really pleased that people have been able to gain qualifications that are essential for finding employment,” Councillor Meral Ece, Executive member for health and social care for adults, said.<br><br>Recent graduates Cynthia Palmer and Derrit Francis commended the ‘exam on demand’ project.<br><br>“I want to go into further education and in the long run get a job and this qualification is the first step towards those goals. At first I was scared of computers but doing this exam showed me I could do it," Cynthia said.<br><br>“I was able to realise my strengths and weaknesses and work on my weaknesses,” Derrit said.<br><br>“I am trying to get back into my field of teaching English and these qualifications are useful for that. A lot of job ads I'm looking at the moment ask for literacy skills. Now I have a recognised literacy qualification which will help me to achieve my goal."<br><br>The next round of courses starts at the Hanley Crouch centre in September.
