Islington in Bloom winners to be announced

The eagerly-awaited results of this year’s Islington in Bloom competition will be announced at a ceremony at the Town Hall on 21 September.<br><br>Islington Mayor, Jonathan Dearth, will present the competition prizes, which aim to reward the gardening efforts of residents, schools and businesses in making Islington a greener, more attractive place in which to live and work. <br><br>The competition opened for entries in April and over 90 ‘blooming sites’ were judged in two rounds over June, by the expert eyes of the Islington Gardeners and officers from Islington Council’s greenspace and leisure division.<br><br>This year’s competition was boosted by a further entry two categories – Best Wildlife entry and Best Forgotten Corner – to add to the established categories of Best School Entry, Community Garden, Front Garden, Container Garden, Residential, Business and Best Bloomin’ Pub. <br><br>Islington’s result in the prestigious London in Bloom competition will also be announced at the awards night. In 2004 the borough received a Silver award.<br><br>The London in Bloom judges, who visited the borough in July, were also shown Islington in Bloom sites of exceptional standard and it will be announced whether any of these have been given a highly-regarded London in Bloom accolade. <br><br>Executive member for sustainability, Cllr Bridget Fox, said: “All Islington in Bloom entries, whether winners or not, are making great contributions to the outdoor environment for everyone living and working in Islington.<br><br>It is great to see people brightening up their living and work spaces in colourful, innovative and environmentally sensitive ways, proving that urban spaces can be green spaces, too. <br><br>My congratulations to all the finalists."<br><br>ENDS
