Following a raid by police and Islington Council officers, a man found to be in charge of an unlicensed sex video shop in Caledonian Road, N1 has been given a 60-hour community punishment order and ordered to pay costs of £650.

On August 23, Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court heard that in December 2003, Nabil Ahmed of Walthamstow, E17, was found to be in possession for supply of 600 unclassified sex videos and DVDs in breach of the Video Recordings Act 1984. In addition, some of the videos could only be legally supplied in a properly licensed sex shop. The council does not license the shop known as 'Bleu Danube' at 8 Caledonian Road that Mr Ahmed was in charge of at the time.

The delays in getting the case to court were due to Mr Ahmed initially giving officers a different name and address, however four witnesses were later able to say whom he really was. Ahmed had previously been convicted in July 2003 for the same offences at the same shop, and on that occasion, was given an 18-month conditional discharge.

All the video works were forfeited to the council, which will now destroy them.

Cllr George Allan, executive member for public protection said: “The council’s trading standards team and the police will continue to prosecute those who operate outside the law.

The proper place for the sale of legal, classified sex videos is in a fully licensed sex shop where there are strict controls in place. Sales elsewhere will be not be tolerated.”

ENDS
