Many Islington students are celebrating today after receiving their GCSE results. Over the past five years the rate of improvement in Islington has been exceptional, with the GCSE results jumping 18.5 percentage points between 2000 – 2004. Provisional figures released today show that the improvement in Islington schools has now reached a sustainable level, with 44 per cent of students gaining 5 or more A* - C grades, compared with a provisional figure of 45 per cent in August 2004. It is expected that this provisional figure will rise when the results are confirmed by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in January 2006.

Bill Clark, Director of Schools’ Services, CEA@Islington, said: ‘Following on the tremendous successes of 2003 (11th most improved LEA in England) and 2004 (most improved of the 150 English LEAs) this year’s results have clearly consolidated the improved performance of GCSE students. Students, schools, and other partners should be encouraged that the improvements of the past few years have been sustained.

‘Congratulations to all those students who have been successful this year.’

The results for individual schools will be published in a few weeks’ time once provisional figures have been confirmed.

Councillor James Kempton, Executive Member for Children and Young People said: ‘Congratulations to all the students who received their GCSE results today. Individual students certainly have a lot to be proud of.

‘Five years ago Islington had among the worst GCSE results in the country. Since then we have seen a massive improvement in our results, reflecting the hard work and dedication of the students, teachers, parents and governors. I am pleased that in 2005 we have found ourselves in a position where our schools are able to maintain their GCSE results at this improved level.

‘We are determined that next year, with such solid foundations now in place, results will be on the rise again.
