Islington’s Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC) capped off a remarkable first year of business, with over 69,000 people visiting the centre – more than the capacity of Arsenal’s new Emirates Stadium.<br><br>Islington’s residents have recycled nearly 3,000 tonnes of materials since the centre opened in August 2004, including over 2.9 tonnes of batteries, 23 tonnes of fridges and 13 tonnes of plastic bottles. <br><br>Forty-four tonnes of furniture were taken by the charity Restore Community Projects, who provide affordable furniture and household appliances for homeless people moving into permanent accommodation, and people on benefits.<br><br>Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability, said: “Islington residents have shown that they want to recycle more and I’m delighted that the Recycling Centre has proven to be such a useful and convenient way to do this. We’re well on our way to reaching our 18% recycling target by 2006.”<br><br>The Recycling Centre is located at 1 Cottage Road, London, N7 8TP (pedestrian access).
