Safe cyclist ventures out on new bike

Local cyclist 10-year-old Rahmel Lee of Highbury N5, can now practice his safe cycling on a brand new bike after winning first prize in Islington Council’s safe cycling competition.<br><br>All year 5 and 6 children who signed up to the summer cycling courses in promotional events at the Nag’s Head and the N1 centres had their names put into a hat for the prize of a new bike donated by S&S Cycles. <br><br>Rahmel is one of many local children who participated in the summer courses run by qualified cycling instructors from the council’s road safety unit and members of Islington’s Community Police team in line with recently introduced national standards.<br><br>Helping the council’s road safety mascot, Charlie the Chicken present the prize Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability said:<br><br>“Cycle training for children is essential to keeping them safe on the road. Cycling is a fun, healthy and green way to get around - more people of all ages are enjoying cycling in Islington and so promoting cycle safety is more important than ever. <br><br>There are still places on our free courses for children in years 5 and 6 - to find out more, call 020 7527 2242.” <br><br>The next round of free courses will take place at Poole's Park Primary School on 17 and 18 September, 8 and 9 October, 25 and 26 October, and 14 and 15 February 2006; and at Islington Green Secondary School on 19 and 20 November and 21 and 22 January.<br><br>Application forms can be downloaded at www.islington.gov.uk.<br><br>ENDS
