Islington Eyes win government recognition

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) have highlighted the council’s 'Eyes for Islington' scheme as an example of best practice within local government. <br><br>Following the scheme's launch three years ago, Islington now has 820 'Eyes' - community volunteers who help the council identify environmental problems so we can sort them out.<br><br>The ODPM's ‘how to’ series provides local authorities and their partners with best practice in a variety of different areas. The Eyes case study is given as part of the publication “How to improve residential areas.”<br><br>The document is available to download or view at www.cleanersafergreener.gov.uk <br><br>Caroline Healy from the ODPM stated: “We specifically chose the Eyes scheme for its innovative approach, as we felt that it offered the public something a bit different.”<br><br>Cllr Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability said: "This recognition is a tribute to the tireless work of Islington's Eyes who have done so much for the environment in the borough.<br><br>More improvements are in the pipeline - from tree plantings to graffiti busting.
