Highbury New Park Day Centre user Joan Napolitano joined in with members from Outreech Productions who put on a show at the centre marking the 60th anniversary of VJ day (15 August 2005).

Londoner Joan who was evacuated to Cornwall and then to Birmingham during the war, said: ‘I don’t remember VJ day that well. It was very low-key for us but I do remember when they dropped the bomb in Hiroshima. It would have been on the newsreels at the cinema and I can clearly remember seeing the explosion.

‘Alright it finished the war but it was a horrible thing to do, Hiroshima was a small place like Birmingham. But you don’t think like that at the time. I was evacuated to Cornwall to have my daughter and then when I fell pregnant the second time I moved to Birmingham which was a bit of a culture shock I can tell you after the green fields of Cornwall.’

Outreech Productions in association with Escape Route Theatre presented the drama and popular songs from the 1940s and earlier to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII.

Ends
