The role of Islington’s green-fingered master composters has been recognised in a national government document.

The community action plan, ‘Together We Can…Secure the Future’ was launched in Islington last month by MPs Elliot Morley and David Milliband.

London Community Recycling Network’s (LCRN) champion composter, Joan Grant, joined the VIPs to publicise the eight-part action plan which covers issues such as health, schools and neighbourhoods.

The aim of the plan is to give communities more input into decisions that affect their daily lives. The launch recognised the contribution that master composters make to communities; thanks to LCRN, Islington’s households can receive free, friendly advice regarding their composting needs by one of their local master composters.

Councillor Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability, said: “It’s great to see residents taking the initiative to learn more about composting and how it can benefit the community - for example by reducing the burden on the environment from waste.

And as our community schemes have shown, you don't need a garden to get involved.

Master composter runs alongside our other innovative green schemes in Islington - like the green waste and kitchen waste collections which reduce landfill and create a greener future.”

Nik Keiboom, one of Islington’s master composters said: “I now know how to reduce the amount of my own waste going to landfill and am available to pass this knowledge on to my fellow Islington residents. In doing this, I can lead a more sustainable life and help others to do the same.”

For more information on becoming a master composter, contact London CRN on 020 7324 4690 via compost@lcrn.org.uk or at www.lcrn.org.uk.

Ends
