Business owners in Islington are being urged to take advantage of ‘tidy business standards’, a unique scheme designed to recognise businesses for their continuing efforts to minimise rubbish on our streets.

Islington Council and ICSL Accord – in conjunction with Encams, who run the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign – want to reward businesses that meet tidy business standards with bronze, silver or gold awards in recognition of their achievements. Traders will also receive free help and advice on how best to dispose of rubbish to improve their business as well as help the environment.

Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability, said: “This is a win-win situation for our local businesses. By actively getting involved in fighting waste and keeping our borough cleaner, they are creating a more sustainable livelihood not only for themselves but for others as well. I look forward to seeing our shops embracing this initiative and proudly displaying their award."

The initial pilot scheme is open to any Islington business interested in participating. Successful participants will be invited to a special awards ceremony that will be timed to coincide with the scheme being launched across the entire borough later this year.

Danny Williams, manager of the Salvation Army Charity Shop on Upper Street, is looking forward to embracing the scheme: “Tidy business standards recognises business for their part in helping to regenerate the area in a positive manner. I urge businesses to join up to this wonderful environmental initiative as together we can all make a real difference.”

The council will be contacting local businesses about the scheme in the next fortnight.
