Islington Council will be celebrating care staff's success on 25 July when up to 100 workers are given certificates to recognise their achievement in gaining NVQs in child care, management, business administration, teaching and training.<br><br>Islington's Mayor Cllr Jonathan Dearth will be giving out the awards. <br><br>Workforce development was a keystone of the government's modernising agenda for public services and a priority area across the council - the social care department has exceeded its target of qualifying 50% of its staff by 2005.<br><br>In addition, the council has qualified a large number of staff in the Independent & Voluntary sectors, via the partnership programme set up around the end of 2003. <br><br>The care staff were sponsored by both Social Services Workforce Development Team and some funding from TOPSS (Training Organisation for Personal Social Services) whereas the business administration staff and others were sponsored by Workforce Development Social Services.<br><br>Cllr Meral Ece, executive member for lifelong learning commented:<br><br>"Islington is committed to improving services for the community.<br><br>A fully trained, committed and supported workforce can deliver the excellent services residents are right to expect - this awards ceremony shows how far we have come in modernising care standards in Islington."<br><br>Ends<br><br>Note: The NVQ award ceremony on 25 July at the Voluntary Centre, 356 Holloway Road N7.
