Estates recycling on your doorstep!

Date: 04-Jul-05 by Charles Dean

Islington Council is making a breakthrough in improving recycling services for residents with the launch of a pilot door-to-door recycling collection scheme for estates on July 4.

The pilot scheme is the first of its kind in Islington and will involve a doorstep collection from 4,436 properties in parts of the Central Street and Upper Street housing office areas, spanning approximately 100 blocks.

Residents will receive their containers on 4 July, with collections beginning on 11 July. The council will collect a wide range of materials for recycling (including newspapers, cardboard, glass, tins, cans and plastic bottles) from the doorstep on a weekly basis, provided the containers are put out for collection by 8am on collection day. Residents will be expected to keep containers indoors once they have been collected.

Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability, said: "Residents have told us that they want to recycle more and the council is committed to providing bigger and better recycling initiatives for Islington.

The door-to-door estates pilot is another way for our residents to help save our environment and achieve our 18% recycling target by 2006.”

The collection service will be provided by a partnership between ICSL and Islington Waste Savers and, if successful, will be rolled out to other housing estates by February 2006.

ENDS
