Islington showed its commitment to going green last Sunday (19 June) when 15,000 people braved sweltering temperatures to participate in the borough’s sustainability festival, Imagine Islington.<br><br>A host of sites around Upper Street and Angel were transformed with free, interactive activities such as creative arts, performances and workshops on local and global environmental issues.<br><br>Attractions included live music, interactive games and displays, street performers, and information stalls and advice. <br><br>Throughout the day, organisers counted more than 7,000 people on Islington Green alone, either picnicking or visiting information stalls.<br><br>Other popular attractions included the Biodiversity Garden in the N1 Centre and the environmentally-themed street theatre performances at Chapel Market.<br><br>The Imagine Islington event organised by Islington Council invited residents to imagine a greener future for the borough, and to share their ideas on what sustainability means for them, and how these local issues can impact on a wider global scale.<br><br>The event was the culmination of the borough’s activities for London Sustainability Weeks (5–19 June – http://www.lsw2005.org).<br><br>During Imagine Islington, the borough was also visited by the G-Wiz electric car, which visited every participating London borough during London Sustainability Weeks. The car is painted with a map of London signed by each borough’s senior councillor for the environment, to pledge their borough’s commitment to making London a greener, healthier, cleaner place.<br><br>Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability, signed the car on behalf of Islington: “Imagine Islington was a great day, showing how important sustainability issues are to our local community. <br><br>I was proud to make the pledge on behalf of Islington residents to show our commitment to a greener future for us all, starting with the small differences we can all make on a local level.” <br><br>For information on sustainability issues and events, contact the sustainability unit at Islington Council on 020 7527 8747.<br><br>Ends
