Islington Council continues to improve the amount of service information provided to residents on its website.

The latest innovation is an online 'Benefits Calculator' - which allows residents to check their eligibility for and calculate their entitlement to housing and council tax benefit, at any time. Residents can also download and print relevant claim forms.

Government research shows that not everyone claims their full entitlements including related benefits such as free school meals and free school uniforms. National Statistics from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) suggest that the total amount of Housing Benefit left unclaimed was between £760 million and £1,400 million for 2002-03.

In the past, customers would have to book an appointment with an advisor in an area housing office. The new system makes it easy to establish which benefits you may be entitled to.

Those without access to a computer at home can use one for free at their local Islington library, on-line learning centre and at a local Citizen’s Advice Bureau, with staff assistance.

Cllr Laura Willoughby, executive member for communities said:

"The changes mean it's easier than ever to find out if you or your family are entitled to a benefit.

That includes not just housing and council tax benefit but also free school uniforms and school dinners."

The government's electronic government agenda (Priority Service Outcome) means local authorities must provide information on benefits (and other services) by March 2006.

ENDS
